About Green Meadows Organics
Our Philosophy of Farming
We believe healthy food starts with healthy soil. A healthy soil is rich in biological activity, organic matter and is balanced with a full complement of vitamins and minerals. We believe animals and people are healthier when fed food grown from healthy soil.
We also believe that it is important for people to know how and where their food is produced. Much food value can be lost in the processing and handling of food products. When food is purchased direct from the farmer you benefit by knowing the freshness and quality of the food you are purchasing. Direct purchasing also supports the local economy and helps to maintain the health of our traditional rural communities.
We are pleased to be able to grow and produce for you high quality products that we feel you and your family will enjoy.
Who We Are
Ever since David was 5 years old he knew he wanted to farm. Dave grew up on a conventional hog farm with his parents, two brothers and two sisters. David and his brother Murray eventually formed a partnership with their dad and in time allowed their dad to retire and formed a two way partnership. At that time the farm included a 110 sow farrow- to- finish operation and a 30 cow- calf operation. David and Murray started transitioning the farm to organic in the mid 1990’s. In 2001, the farm had its first organic beef to sell. In 2004, David and Murray divided the operation to farm with their own families. David and Sandra took over the beef operation and Murray and his wife, Carolyn, the hog operation. David and Sandra added pastured chickens and turkeys to their beef operation and worked at marketing their products through the Dieppe and Kingston Penninsula Farmer Markets. David and Sandra are parents to Marta, Jacob and Daniel who are all very much a part of the farming operation. The children are homeschooled, allowing for them to take on their own roles on the farm. Marta has grown vegetables for Market the last couple of years and now is starting a CSA vegetable program. Both Jacob and Daniel manage their own flocks of hens over the growing season and sell their organic eggs at market. As a family we enjoy living, learning and working together.
